The day started with a meeting. Archt. Ambos called our attention regarding on the estimate we made on the Sacred Heart Jesuits School particularly on the Early Education Building. There was a large gap between our data and the their data. After few review of the calculations, the problem was solved.

A meeting was conducted and we were invited to attend. We were introduced to different foremen and lead men on the site so as to have coordination during site inspections.

The whole day was filled with the following tasks:

  • Inspection on the accomplishments on the site during the morning and during the afternoon before we left. Since I was assigned to building 2, I inspected the rooms in the first level. Most of the rooms have been partitioned already. However, the toilet and bathroom of some of the rooms have not yet been partitioned. Most of the walls were incompletely plastered and lavatory counters were not yet installed. The lobby was still messy and occupied with steel scaffoldings and the walls outside the room was not yet plastered. During the afternoon, a small improvement was observed and the area being plastered in and outside the rooms increased.
  • Estimation of floor area of the rooms, waiting lounge, laundry, administration office and toilet & bathroom and wall area of toilet & bathroom. The purpose of the calculation was for the rough estimate of the tiles to be used in rooms, waiting lounge, laundry, administration office and toilet & bathroom for the entire three buildings. The estimate was passed to Archt. Ambos right after we finished it.

Second Day: April 21, 2008 [Monday]

I arrived at the site this morning at exactly 8:00 am. Just on-time. There was nothing much to do till Archt. Ambos, the Project Engineer came and gave us daily task which is to constantly inspect the three buildings. I was assigned to inspect building 2 and another two levels from building 1. My other classmate was assigned to building 3 and the other two levels in building 1.

My classmate and I had a simultaneous inspection during the morning and took notice keenly of every detail of lacking and unsanitary in every room in the building we were assigned. I have observed that most of the rooms in level 1 of the three buildings were still unfinished. The walls have been installed but were incompletely plastered. The toilet and bathroom of each rooms were also unaccomplished yet- some were incompletely plastered and some dividers of the toilet and the shower area were not yet installed.

On the second level of each building, the concrete hollow blocks were still being installed. Level three and four on building 3 were still on the process of construction while levels three and four on building 1 and 2 still have shoring posts and form works supporting the slabs.

After few minutes of inspection and observation of the works of some workers, we went back to the office and were given another task which was to calculate and estimate the floor area of the Sacred Heart Jesuits School located in Canduman, Mandaue City. I was tasked to compute for the floor area of the four-storey High School Building, the two-storey canteen and the Administration Office located at the second level of the adjacently connected High School and Grade School Building. The purpose of the area calculation was to provide accurate data of the floor area of the school building to be painted and tiled.

The computation lasted for only few hours. At around 4 pm, my classmate and I decided to go back to the three buildings to perform inspection on the rooms. There were only few improvements and still no room was completely finished at the end of the inspection.

At around 5:30 pm, my classmate and I were called to the Project Manager’s Office where we presented our respective calculated floor areas. We were with the Site Engineer, few people from Davies and Epoxy Company Representative and Engr. Dennis Oporto, the engineer assigned to estimate the Sacred Heart Jesuits School Buildings and perform a check on the estimate we made. Most of our breakdown estimate coincide with the data provided by Engr. Dakay except for the floor area of laboratories and the corridors. Our data is way lesser than the one from Engr. Dakay. After few checks performed by Engr. Oporto, our data for the corridor area turned out to be lacking. Also, we could have not included some laboratories. After another checking performed by Engr. Oporto, Archt. Ambos decided to let us go and have Engr. Oporto continue the task.

We left the site at around 7pm. Our day was productive enough and we have completed the task given to us. We have definitely enjoyed another day with another smile..

First Day: April 19, 2008 [Saturday]

Morning

Time Out: 12:00 PM

Afternoon

Time Out: 5:00 PM

I have officially started my on-the-job training today. I arrived at the site at around 7:45am. I immediately searched for the entrance gate and waited for my classmate. At around 7:55am, we entered the tiny galvanized iron sheet gate along P. Larrazabal St. and asked for inquiries about the Project Manager. After an hour of waiting, Archt. Ambos came, and oriented us with some basic rules and policies regarding safety, and other important matters. The project was a Proposed Cebu Doctor’s University Dormitory which is composed of three four-storey buildings. The project is about to finish in three months time. We were given an attendance sheet where we will be logging in and out daily to have our training hours recorded.

Few minutes after, we were somehow busy with our tour around the site. We were taken to the third floor where we observed the pouring of concrete on the adjacent building. We were also taken to the ground floor to take a look into some of its finished rooms and the on-going excavation for the cistern.

During the afternoon, we were filled with paper works and some computations on lengths of beams and girders, total volume of beams and girders on the fourth level of building 2 and the volume of the two gutters on the roof level of building 1 and 2 along grid 2 and 3, respectively.

The day was filled with more or less few paper works and a little boredom. It was our first day though and the engineers promised a lot more work this Monday… I just hope it won’t be tougher..
